Older Scout Programs

Must be 3rd year camper or above (leaders also welcome if space available)

Geocaching
Learn the basics of GPS operation and navigate Camp Joy with a GPS and map to locate special Camp Joy collectibles. Available Monday and Tuesday. Times, if any, to be determined.

Cooking Expo
This group of Camper Chefs will meet after breakfast on Wednesday and head to their outdoor kitchen within Camp Joy. Learning advanced outdoor cooking skills will give them the opportunity to cook using tried and true methods as well as innovative methods. They will dine ono what has been prepared and return to their unit mid-afternoon.

Carlyle Lake Yacht Club
Sail a 28-foot sailboat on Carlyle Lake for a day! Participants will leave Camp Joy after breakfast Friday. Scouts will eat lunch on board and return to camp by dinner. Must be a blue swimmer. There is a fee of $20.00/participant.

Outposts

These outposts are associated with specific programs or classes at camp.

Astronomy Outpost
If taking Astronomy Merit Badge you will be required to take this outpost to complete the badge at camp. Day and time to be determined. Not overnight.

Survival Outpost
If taking the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge you will be required to participate in this outpost to complete the badge at camp. This is an overnight outpost. Day and time to be scheduled.

Brotherhood Renewal
Brotherhood members of the Order of the Arrow who wish to renew their "ties of Brotherhood" are invited to meet at Ruehl Lodge Tuesday evening, go on the Brotherhood hike, and sleep out on their own to renew their commitment to the Order of the Arrow and Taleka Lodge.

OA Social
All members are invited to stay after the ice cream social Tuesday evening and camp outside Ruehl Lodge for a "lock-in" type event. Watch a movie, make new friends, and renew old friendships! On the registration form, check this only if you are planning on staying overnight. If you are only attending the ice cream social, do not check this event.

4:30-5:45 Programs

The last program hour of the day is an "Elective Program" (Scoutmaster's words) period. A Scout may take one or more or none of the following recreational programs during that time:

  • Free Swim
  • Recreational Boating
  • Archery
  • Native American Ways
  • Recreational Fishing
  • Fireman Chit
  • Climbing and Rappelling
  • Regalia making

Etc.

Programs that are non-scheduled or will be scheduled while we are in camp.

Mile Swim
Scouts have the opportunity of swimming one mile at camp. The mile swim will be scheduled in the morning during your week in camp (probably Friday). Required preparation/training for this event will be daily at 6:00AM in the blessed morning. Get yourself up...

Honor Patrol
Each Patrol that earns the Honor Patrol designation will receive an "Honor Patrol" ribbon for their flag. If you are interested in this, you must talk it up within your Patrol. Your Patrol will not be forced to, or even be reminded about, earning this award. To qualify, a Patrol must:

  1. Have and display your patrol flag.
  2. Participate in the daily Patrol Leaders Council meeting.
  3. As a patrol, conduct a camp flag ceremony during the session.
  4. As a patrol, complete a camp improvement project.
  5. 50% of patrol must participate in an outpost camp program.
  6. 75% of patrol members are blue swimmers.
  7. 100% of patrol members have earned Totin' Chip and Fireman Chit.
  8. Have campsite host visit your campsite at least three (3) times during the week.

Honor Troop
To be recognized as an Honor Troop, the SPL must certify that the Troop has completed the following:

  1. Display Troop flag in the campsite.
  2. Scoutmaster participates in the Daily Leaders Meeting.
  3. SPL participates in the Daily Camp SPL meeting and holds a daily Patrol Leaders Council meeting to share the information.
  4. At least one patrol in the troop qualifies as Honor Patrol.
  5. SPL signs up as guest at Camp Director's Table for one meal during camp. As a guest at the Camp Director's Table, the SPL will be introduced at the meal and the troop will be recognized.
  6. Invite camp director or program director for refreshments at your campsite.
